This very old vintage radio arrived on my service bench 9-16-2026 in its original box. In the box are its original documentation, earphone, and a wadded up transparent carry case that is ruined.The radio was/is missing its original top trim. (I made something to make it look like something)I connected it to power and the radio did not work at all.Research:
Radiomuseum says this radio was made in 1958. What is a “Boy’s Radio?” Intended for children, it was a toy for children “just like the one mom & dad has”. Being that they were for children, they are had to find today.Repair:
I carefully disassembled the radio and found that someone already tried to fix their radio. It had been freshly re-capped. I replaced the previously replaced electrolytic capacitors just to be sure. Who ever tried to fix it did not know that the position of the coil that goes around its internal bar antenna is how these are “aligned”. The coil had moved from its peak position. I re-peaked it and the radio worked.A two transistor radio needs all the help it can get. This radio did not come with one: I fabricated an antenna for it. It helps.Also it was missing its front top trim. (That’s a bummer). I made a new front out of sheet brass and decorated it so it would look better.I checked its earphone. One wire inside its end had detached. I repaired the earphone and tested it. Works.A little deox for its volume control, reassembled, and the radio was back together and working.Performance:
Volume control goes smoothly from totally silent to overload loud. For strong local stations it produces a sound that is Clean and Clear.And… strong local stations is all you can hope for with a “Boy’s Radio”. They have is one transistor to run the tuner, and one to run the speaker. That’s it. I have this radio working like it did when it was new. It tunes all the strong local stations in the Portland Oregon area. Screwing in the antenna I made makes those stations come in louder.Condition:
