Altair Airlines was a prominent American regional airline based out of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, that primarily served the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic regions, anchoring a vital network of high-frequency commuter and passenger feeder flights connecting Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) directly with major destinations like New York, Washington, D.C., Boston, and Richmond. Founded in 1966, the carrier built a legendary reputation over nearly two decades as an early innovator in regional scheduled airline transit, expanding rapidly into jet service before severe capitalization constraints and intense post-deregulation competition forced the carrier to abruptly suspend all flight networks and declare bankruptcy in 1982. Throughout its historic sixteen-year operational history, Altair Airlines utilized an efficient and diverse fleet of aircraft custom-tailored for rapid short-haul city pairs and high-density commuter corridors, most natively flying the Nord 262, the Beechcraft 99, and the Fokker F28 Fellowship commercial twinjet.
