1958 Zenith Royal 500, Chassis 8AT40Z2. AM, 8 Transistors, requires 4 "AA" batteries not included. 6" Tall, 3.6" Wide, 1.5" Deep. This radio has been repaired, aligned and tested by Toms Antique Radio Repair. All of the electrolytic capacitors have been replaced. These usually go bad in transistor radios of this vintage.These radios are notorious for having a scratchy tuner. You may hear these sounds as you tune the radio. This is not a problem, just rotate the tuning knob back and forth through these sounds and they will go away. This process also works for the volume control if it becomes scratchy.
That being said, these are my favorite transistor radios to work on. Not only do they fix up nicely, but with having 8 Transistors, you won't find a better transistor radio during this time frame, with a better reception and sound. Zenith was I believe, the first to offer their radios with a nylon case. You won't find any missing plastic chips with these cases either.
The previous owner allowed the batteries to leak causing the battery compartment to look dirty. It was cleaned the best I could and the metal battery contacts are in good condition and were buffed to a nice shine.
An all around good performing radio that you will be proud to own.
