It's unknown if this has been used or not but it's probable that it hasn't been because nobody went out of their way to retrieve these devices after use. They were relatively cheap to make and were made to be disposable. These were used during the Vietnam War era to communicate with submarines. The device had four messages built in and turning the large plastic screw to a set number (1-4) activated the transmitter to the set message designed for the sub to pick up. The battery inside was made to run off sea water and activated when it came in contact with it. When you shine a light down the hole on the bottom you can see part of the motor inside. This is decommissioned.
