Connecting the Pearl to a TomTom 510/910

The TomTom is an awesome device. The Pearl is an awesome device. Combined, it is navigation at its best. This FAQ will guide you in connecting a Pearl to a TomTom 510/910 to use hands-free calling and TomTom PLUS features. There are a few prerequisites. First, your Pearl must be using the 4.2.1 OS. It will not let the TomTom use the PLUS features without this upgrade. Also, the TomTom can use a good amount of data, so I would strongly recommend that you have an unlimited data plan. Alright, on to the good stuff.

  • Setting up hands-free calling:

1. On your TomTom device, select Mobile Phone from the menu.

2. When prompted to establish a connection between your TomTom and your phone, press Yes.

3. You now need to make you Blackberry discoverable in Bluetooth mode. To do this go to Options->Bluetooth then press the menu button and go to Options. Then scroll down to Discoverable and change this to Yes. Then press the menu button and select Save.

4. Select Yes when prompted to search for phones on your TomTom.

5. After a few moments a message should appear on your TomTom saying “PLEASE CONFIRM: Connect to Blackberry 8100?” Select Yes

6. When your Pearl asks for a passkey, input 0000

7. When your Pearl asks is you want to connect to the TomTom, check do not ask this again, and then select Yes.

8. You should now get a message on your TomTom saying that your Blackberry is ready for hands-free calling.

9. Select OK at the next few menus until you reach the one entitled TomTom PLUS. Select Yes If you would like to configure your TomTom for PLUS services.

    • Setting up PLUS services:

10. Since the Blackberry isn’t officially supported, select Other in the bottom right.

11. Then select your country. For me that is United States.

12. Then select your wireless provider. For me that is Cingular.

13. If it does not connect automatically, then you will need to manually set it up.

      • Setting connection settings manually:

14. The first thing to do is find the APN settings for your provider. These can be found by clicking here

a) Cingular happens to have two, so I will use the one I normally use which is

 APN: wap.cingular

 User Name: [email address]

 Pass: CINGULAR1

15. After having entered that information, you will be prompted about obtaining your IP address automatically. If no IP was specified on the APN page, then select Automatic. Else, select Manual and enter it there.

16.The same applies for the DNS server address.

17.The next input page says Dial. Here, enter *99#

18. At the Login Script page, enter the appropriate login script for your service provider. For Cingular, it is:

 at+cgdcont=1,"IP","isp.cingular"

a) A short list of them can be found Modem strings listed under # 8 of this FAQ

19. If prompted to send some information to the TomTom server, press either Ok or Skip. It doesn’t have any effect on setting it up.

20. If it can’t connect, it could either be a problem with your service provider, or with the settings you entered. Make sure you have the APN settings correct, and make sure they are also correct on your Blackberry.
Congratulations, your Blackberry and TomTom should now be the best of friends and you should be able to access all those cool PLUS services and make hands-free calls.
